Earth Materials: The Earth Materials kit covers the topics of rocks versus minerals, identifying rocks and minerals by their properties, and understanding that there are many tests we can do to find out the ingredients in things and classifying rocks and minerals. We will begin with the Earth Materials kit and later in the year move to the Environments kit. We will be using the Foss Kits for science. The program teaches students to look at writing, show them how to generate ideas on their own, and how to choose writing to improve and how to edit and revise. For Writing, we will also be using Lucy Calkin’s writing program for the intermediate level, which has several units of focus including stories, essays, literary essays, etc. The workbook provides multiple ways for students to practice their new vocabulary. For vocabulary, we will be using the Building Vocabulary Curriculum, which teaches students to identify the meaning of a word based on root of each word, as well as the context of the sentence. This will help teachers reach students best and provide them individually with the skills they need at their level. To best support our K-5 students at SMS, our reading program, “Walk to Read” is designed to allow students to move fluidly throughout the year between reading groups taught by various teachers.
